WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA) today applauds the confirmation of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. as Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) and looks forward to working with him and his team to reshore America’s generic drug and medical device manufacturing industries. CPA has been the leading voice in exposing the national security risks posed by the United States’ dangerous dependence on foreign producers—particularly in China and India—for essential medicines, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), and medical devices.
“For far too long, America has been at the mercy of foreign producers that routinely violate FDA safety regulations for life-saving medicines, generic drugs, and essential medical equipment,” said Jon Toomey, President of CPA. “Secretary Kennedy understands the urgent need to reshore this critical sector, and his leadership at HHS will be key to achieving that goal. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the vulnerabilities of relying on overseas supply chains, and we cannot afford to remain dependent on adversarial nations for our most essential healthcare needs.”
CPA’s research indicates that foreign government subsidies, particularly from India and China, have enabled predatory pricing strategies that undermine U.S. manufacturers. These practices not only threaten domestic industry but also compromise national security by increasing America’s dependence on fragile and adversarial supply chains. CPA President Jon Toomey and Executive Vice President Nick Iacovella have written extensively on these threats in the academic journal American Affairs, highlighting the urgent need for a comprehensive reshoring strategy:
Additionally, CPA has extensively documented the worsening drug shortage crisis and the risks associated with America’s growing reliance on foreign pharmaceutical producers:
- America’s Life-Threatening Drug Shortages Reach Record Highs
- Drug Shortages Increase Odds of Patient Death—More Than Half of Drugs in Short Supply for Over 12 Months
- Surge in Pharmaceutical Imports Threatens U.S. National Security as India & China Dominance Grows
- Skyrocketing Pharmaceutical Imports to the U.S. Endanger National Security
As part of the Make America Healthy Again agenda, CPA will continue working with Secretary Kennedy and the HHS team to restore domestic pharmaceutical and medical device production, strengthen America’s healthcare security, and ensure that American patients and providers have reliable access to safe, high-quality essential medicines and equipment.
“We are entering a new era where economic security and national security are rightly recognized as inseparable,” Toomey continued. “The Trump administration has already taken strong steps to rebuild domestic industry and reduce foreign dependence, and Secretary Kennedy’s leadership at HHS will be critical in ensuring that Americans are never again left vulnerable to supply chain disruptions in the medical sector.”
CPA looks forward to collaborating with HHS, Congress, and industry leaders to implement policies that prioritize American production, create jobs, and protect public health by ensuring that the United States can manufacture its own essential medicines and medical devices.
