WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA) today issued a statement in response to President Trump’s announcement regarding new economic “agreements” with China.
Jon Toomey, President of CPA, issued the following statement:
“President Trump has already made the most important deal of his life—his promise to the American people to end U.S. dependence on China and rebuild our domestic industrial capacity. The voters overwhelmingly re-elected him to deliver on that promise through a bold trade and industrial agenda that will reclaim America’s economic independence. His plan to eliminate U.S. dependence on China, revoke its Most Favored Nation status, and phase out Chinese imports of essential goods—while establishing universal tariffs on most foreign products—is exactly what our nation needs.
“Now is the time for President Trump to finish the deal he made with the American people and prioritize domestic producers—many of whom are facing a surge in imports, including U.S. steel fabricators and aluminum extruders. It is essential that the Commerce Department finalize the many Section 232 investigations nearing completion—on semiconductors, polysilicon, generic pharmaceuticals, and critical minerals. These investigations are part of a historic, essential effort to restore our industrial base, and completing them must take priority over striking new trade deals. The administration has launched 12 new 232 investigations this year—the most consequential effort this century to reshore U.S. manufacturing—but to date the White House has implemented proclamations on only three.
“President Trump’s America First Trade Policy is the foundation for American renewal: phasing out dependence on China, strengthening domestic production, and ensuring foreign powers can no longer weaponize our economic vulnerabilities. The best way to achieve that is to complete the 232 process, impose the necessary tariffs, and bring our supply chains home once and for all.”
As part of President Trump’s Agenda47 campaign plan, he promised to:
“[C]ompletely eliminate U.S. dependence on China–the primary beneficiary of Democrats’ globalist agenda. In addition to universal baseline tariffs on most foreign goods, President Trump’s plan will reclaim our economic independence from China. President Trump will revoke China’s Most Favored Nation trade status and adopt a 4-year plan to phase out all Chinese imports of essential goods—everything from electronics to steel to pharmaceuticals. This will include strong protections to ensure China cannot circumvent restrictions by passing goods through conduit countries.
