Trade policy and the Trans-Pacific Partnership have become contentious topics on the campaign trail in several Senate and House races, including in North Carolina and Wisconsin.

Senate Finance Committee member Richard Burr (R-NC), challenged in his re-election bid by Democrat Deborah Ross, in an Aug. 12 Twitter post asked his opponent to speak out against the TPP.
“TPP is a raw deal for #NC. @DeborahRossNC, why haven’t you spoken out against the #TPP?,” Burr said in his tweet. Burr’s campaign did not respond when asked to elaborate on the statement.
Ross came out against the deal during her primary campaign back in February. She is considered a strong challenger in North Carolina, where polls show a tight race.

In an open House race for Wisconsin’s 8th district, meanwhile, Democrat Tom Nelson and his Republican opponent, Mike Gallagher — both of whom have come out against TPP — challenged each other’s stances on trade this week.
Nelson, who gained the endorsement of the United Steelworkers, bashed Gallagher’s views on trade during an Aug. 18 event. “Today I stood with WI workers and made it clear — I will never support a trade agreement that could hurt WI jobs,” Nelson said in a Twitter post the same day.
