Washington, DC- Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announced yesterday that the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) should not be sent to Congress until after the 2016 elections. He emphasized that the deal would be defeated if it was sent to the floor spring or summer of next year.

“I think the president would be making a big mistake to try to have that voted on during the election,” said McConnell. “There’s significant pushback all over the place.”

This is a major win for the people of America. The Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA) has been working hard to stop the deal from passing.

“The near defeat of Fast Track last June revealed that support for trade deals which prioritize global industry at the expense of Americans is collapsing.” said Michael Stumo, CEO of CPA. “We applaud Senator McConnell for publicly admitting that a majority opposes the TPP.”

A Whitehouse Spokeswoman responded to McConnell’s comments by stating that McConnell’s suggestions aren’t stopping them from trying to pass the TPP next year. “We will continue working with Congressional leaders to pass the Trans-Pacific Partnership as soon as possible next year,” said Brandi Hoffine.

Without McConnell’s support, the Obama administration will have a very difficult time passing the TPP in 2016.

“The US needs to win the international competition for jobs,” continued Stumo. “The TPP is yet another step towards losing and needs to be indefinitely shelved.”
