Brady’s selection will be ratified by the full House Republican Conference during a meeting on Thursday morning, after which he will formally become Ways & Means chairman.
The Republican Conference will also name Rep. Tom Rice (R-SC) to take Ryan’s spot on the full committee, according to a spokesman for House GOP Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA). Brady’s slot on the Ways & Means trade subcommittee will also have to be filled.
Brady won the Ways & Means gavel by defeating Rep. Pat Tiberi (R-OH), the current chair of the Ways & Means trade subcommittee. Brady’s selection makes him the seventh Republican from Texas to hold the chair of a House committee; some observers had previously seen the fact that he hails from the Lone Star State as a strike against Brady.
