The ranking members of the House and Senate trade committees today sent a letter to the head of the World Trade Organization lambasting the organization’s secretariat for issuing a report that calls for the removal of antidumping and countervailing duties instead of urging WTO members to resolve the policies that create the need for duties in the first place.

“We are deeply disappointed that the Secretariat of the WTO has once again issued a report that expresses concern not with dumping, not with trade-distorting subsidies, and not with unsafe imported foods, but instead expresses concern with the measures taken to address those very real problems,” Ways & Means Committee ranking member Sandy Levin (D-MI) and Finance Committee ranking member Ron Wyden (D-WI) wrote in a Sept. 8 letter to WTO Director-General Roberto Azevedo.
The letter refers to a June report issued by the WTO Secretariat on so-called “trade-restrictive measures.” The report found that G20 members have ratcheted up such measures to the highest monthly level since 2009.
