CPA Supports FCC Proceeding to Restrict Huawei Equipment from U.S. Market

WASHINGTON — The Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA) today submitted a comment to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in support of the Commission’s proposed rule to address threats to U.S. national security posed by Huawei, China’s state-directed telecommunications company. On March 12, 2021, the FCC designated five Chinese companies as posing a threat to U.S. national security, including Huawei. CPA supports the FCC’s proposed rule to restrict equipment from Covered List entities, and believes it would serve the public interest and have a positive impact on the economy and American jobs.

“CPA supports the FCC’s efforts to restrict entities of the FCC’s Covered List, both in revoking existing equipment authorizations and prohibiting new ones,” wrote Jeff Ferry, CPA Chief Economist. “Huawei was founded by the Chinese military. Huawei and ZTE have a long record of being involved in espionage operations for the Chinese government, and of failing to resolve security flaws in its equipment, including network access equipment in various nations… Americans who use Huawei devices are at risk for PRC surveillance, espionage, and other forms of compromised integrity.”

Earlier this year, CPA and China Tech Threat jointly released a white paper titled “Maintaining U.S. Leadership in Semiconductors and Countering China’s Threats.” The paper examines the decline in U.S. market share in global semiconductor manufacturing, the attendant risks to U.S economic and national security, and why maintaining U.S. leadership in the semiconductor industry is critical for the U.S.
