Domestic manufacturers reaffirm support for tariffs on China
Manufacturing groups send joint letter to president endorsing tariffs
Washington. Hundreds of independent U.S. producers today joined with industrial and manufacturing organizations to urge continued tariffs on subsidized imports from China. In a letter to President Trump, the collection of manufacturers and industrial groups expressed support for the tariffs while noting their concerns about human rights abuses in China.
The letter includes hundreds of domestic companies as well as a diverse set of industrial groups, including the Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA), the Retread Tire Association (RTA), and the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association (APRA). Overall, the organizations and companies collectively represent millions of U.S. workers.
CPA chair Dan DiMicco said, “If you want to get a sense of how the American people really feel about President Trump’s tariffs, take a look at today’s letter. Small and mid-sized companies from all over the country signed the letter—everything from apple growers, truckers, and lumber producers to steel, glass, and tire makers. China has been taking advantage of America’s openness for many years, and this has cost us millions of middle class jobs. The American people are tired of it, and they support the president’s approach.”
The letter to the president, which was headlined ‘County First,’ supports “efforts to resolve the trade imbalance between the U.S. and China.” It urges the president to “stand firm” on tariffs that have been levied on over $250 billion worth of Chinese imports. It also asks the administration to focus on humanitarian issues since “China is among the world’s worst abusers of human rights.”
Michael Stumo, CEO of the CPA, said, “As this letter makes clear, multinational groups and many in the media claim that the American people are bearing the cost of these tariffs. But that’s not accurate. China has been forced to absorb the tariff costs, and U.S. consumers are not seeing price increases—particularly when inflation remains low. What the American people are seeing, however, is the return of middle-class jobs. The administration’s tariffs are providing relief against China’s economic aggression, and the president should stay the course.”
