The Trump administration Monday told Beijing to focus on fixing its own “unfair trading practices” instead of hitting “fairly traded” U.S. exports with tariffs – the first U.S. reaction to China’s announcement of new duties on 128 U.S. products in response to Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum.

“China’s subsidization and continued overcapacity is the root cause of the steel crises. Instead of targeting fairly traded U.S. exports, China needs to stop its unfair trading practices which are harming U.S national security and distorting global markets,” said White House deputy press secretary Lindsay Walters.
China on Monday imposed a 15 percent tariff on a 120 U.S. products and a 25 percent tariff on eight items in response to the U.S. decision to levy a 25 percent tariff on steel and a 10 percent tariff on aluminum.
