The U.S. ambassador to the European Union has accused the European Commission of potentially endangering the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) with its stance in the agriculture negotiations.

Ambassador Anthony Gardner charged in a March 17 speech that the commission is seeking to expand its already large market access in the United States without being willing to open its market to U.S. exports despite the fact that the U.S. already has a significant agricultural trade deficit with the EU.
Given the importance of agriculture to most of the 50 U.S. states, it is hard to see how Congress could approve a TTIP agreement that contains that disparity, he told the American Chamber of Commerce to the European Union’s 2016 Transatlantic Conference.
“The European Commission has a choice: either it can continue to pretend that the U.S. is the problem on agriculture, or it can actually start addressing the glaring imbalance,” he told the conference.
