Press Release | CPA Economics Team to Speak at Western Economic Association International Conference

Will present paper on U.S. Job Quality Index

Washington. The Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA) has been invited to participate in the Western Economic Association International (WEAI) upcoming annual conference in Denver. CPA Chief Economist Jeff Ferry and Senior Economist Steven Byers will present a paper on the U.S. Private Sector Job Quality Index (JQI), a new economic indicator developed in partnership with the Cornell University Research Academy of Development, Law, and Economics (CRADLE), the University of Missouri at Kansas City Economics Department, and author and investment banker Dan Alpert.

“CPA’s research continues to move into the mainstream of U.S. economic discussion,” said Michael Stumo, CEO of the CPA. “The invitation from WEAI demonstrates that CPA is producing an important body of work. Jeff Ferry and Steven Byers were previously recognized with a national award for their research on decoupling the U.S. economy from China. Now, they’re raising awareness of the changes in the U.S. workforce that have come from the ongoing loss of good-paying manufacturing jobs.”

Founded in 1922, WEAI’s membership includes roughly 2,000 economists worldwide. Ferry and Byers will present a paper to WEAI members, ‘Measuring Job Quality in the U.S. Labor Market,’ during a panel discussion moderated by Colorado State University’s Dr. Anita Alves Pena. CPA has continued to promote the JQI’s findings as part of a wider effort to spotlight the legacy of longstanding, failed free trade policies.

“Speaking to the WEAI membership is a gratifying opportunity,” said Byers. “We’re continuing to to talk about the JQI in the academic community and to gain broader economic acceptance for our work.”

At the WEAI conference, Byers will also join a panel discussion on “The Role of Declining Public Expenditure on Economic Mobility for Low-Income Families in Colorado.” The panel will look at variations in Colorado household incomes during periods of recession and expansion.
