Mnuchin confirmed, sworn in at Treasury; McConnell starts process for Ross vote

The Senate voted 53-47 to confirm Steven Mnuchin as Treasury secretary Monday night and could soon take up the nomination of Wilbur Ross for Commerce secretary.

Mnuchin gained the votes of all Senate Republicans and one Democrat, West Virginia’s Joe Manchin, after Democrats ran out of ways to keep the former hedge fund manager from the Treasury job. He was sworn in after the vote.

Ross, who sailed through a confirmation hearing before the Senate Commerce Committee in January, had not faced a fraction of the controversy that has dogged Mnuchin, but his nomination has yet to be brought to the Senate floor.
