Inside U.S. Trade: “Senate Republicans, Business Seek To Tackle TPA Trafficking Amendment”

Senate Republicans and business groups are criticizing an amendment on human trafficking added to the Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) bill in last week’s Finance Committee markup as hampering the ability of the fast-track bill to function as intended, and are trying to find ways to get it out of the legislation.

 

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-UT) in April 29 comments to reporters blasted the amendment, introduced by Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), as “very harmful” because it makes it would make difficult for the TPA bill to work. He also said it has caused the administration “an awful lot of gastric excess.”
