The leadership of the House Agriculture Committee and the chairman of the House Appropriations Agriculture Subcommittee have urged their colleagues to oppose the transfer of catfish inspection from USDA to the Food and Drug Administration, which they charged at a minimum involves the misuse of the Congressional Review Act (CRA) and would fail to protect the health of U.S. consumers.

Using the CRA to overturn catfish inspections by USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is “a misuse, if not an abuse,” they said in a June 16 Dear Colleague letter. The catfish inspection program was transferred from FDA to FSIS in the 2014 farm bill.
