Employment Opportunity: Part-Time Tax Research Assistant

Background: The Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is seeking a part-time Tax Research Assistant to support the CPA Economics team with research on corporate taxation issues. CPA is a bipartisan coalition of US manufacturers, agricultural groups, and labor unions. CPA engages in educational efforts and advocacy related to US trade and tax policies, with the goal of rebuilding the US economy and restoring broadly shared prosperity for America.

The Project: Corporate taxation in the US has evolved into a complex set of rules, exemptions, deductions, and deferrals that favor large multinational enterprises and foreign companies while providing large benefits for certain industries. Despite some improvements to the overall tax code, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 failed to address most of these inequities. CPA is seeking a research assistant to help us fulfill a research agenda, including the development of a series of reports analyzing the results of the 2017 bill as well as generating proposals to improve or replace the current system.

Position description and qualifications: The research project is expected to run from six to 12 months. The right candidate will have excellent research skills and the ability to write clear explanations of complex subjects. They should have familiarity with tax economics and the US taxation system as well as some familiarity with the US corporate and business landscape. They may be a graduate student in accounting, economics, business, or law. Additionally, they will have experience gathering and working with data, including experience with Excel and other software platforms used to process and analyze data.

The Tax Research Assistant will be expected to work approximately 40 hours per month for the duration of the project. The project will likely begin on or around May 1. Pay will be competitive. The Tax Research Assistant will report to CPA Chief Economist Jeff Ferry.

Location: In the United States, preferably in the Washington DC area. The actual day-to-day work will be conducted remotely.

Application procedure: Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. To be considered, candidates should submit a cover letter and resume along with references to [email protected]. Only candidates being actively considered will be contacted.
