CPA Members Made a Big Difference in Congress Last Week

Washington ~ Members of the Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA) fanned out across Capitol Hill last week to support a national goal of balanced trade and smart tax reform while opposing dumb trade deals like the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

“CPA members did an amazing job delivering the smart trade message to Congress this week,” said Michael Stumo, CEO of CPA. “Congressman and their staff were more receptive than ever to fixing America’s trade problems.”

Several important trends became clear in the CPA fly in.  First, the TPP is very unpopular.  Second, concern about trade deficits is strong and no longer dismissed. Third, CPA is a trusted resource for Congressmen and high level staffers seeking to understand how to fix the problems.  Fourth, the ascendance of trade as a voting issue in this Presidential campaign is having an impact in Congress.  Fifth, the elite’s defense of stupid past trade policy increasingly falls on deaf ears.

“CPA’s work has caused and accelerated Congressional defections from the establishment’s old, failed trade policy,” continued Stumo. “Congress men and women increasingly realize that it is both good policy and good politics to support a pro-American strategy to win the international competition for good jobs and sustainable prosperity. They can do this through a national goal of balanced trade, pro-competitive tax reform that is good for all US production and workers, and shelving the Trans-Pacific Partnership.”
