CPA Applauds Passage of Bipartisan, Bicameral Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act

WASHINGTON — The Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA) today applauded the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate for passing the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, bipartisan legislation which will ensure that goods tainted with the forced labor of Uyghurs, and others, in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) — and elsewhere in China — and by certain entities affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) do not enter the U.S. market. Both the Biden and Trump administrations have declared that China is committing genocide against the Uyghurs in Xinjiang, including committing human rights abuses such as forced labor, forced sterilization, and mass internment.

“On behalf of CPA and our members, we applaud Congress — and in particular Senators Marco Rubio and Jeff Merkley, as well as Representatives Jim McGovern and Chris Smith — for finally sending this bill to President Biden to be signed into law,” said Michael Stumo, CEO of CPA. “With the passage of this bill, Congress is sending a clear message to China and stateless multinational corporations that profit off of cheap Chinese imports: the days of profiting off of forced labor and human rights abuses are over. President Biden should sign this bill into law without delay, and CPA looks forward to working with the administration to ensure this important new law is implemented as Congress intended.”

CPA believes it is essential to label China’s actions as “genocide,” particularly for Uyghurs interned in forced labor camps or victims of forced labor transfer programs. We have called on the U.S. government to ban all products made in whole or in part with forced labor.
