CPA Applauds Creation of House Select Committee on China

WASHINGTON — The Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA) today released a statement after the U.S. House of Representatives voted in an overwhelming bipartisan fashion—365 to 65—to form the House Select Committee on China. The new committee will be chaired by Representative Mike Gallagher (R-WI). In December, Chairman Gallagher outlined his vision for the committee’s work, including restoring domestic supply chains and ending U.S. dependence on China in critical economic industries.

In a speech on the House floor, Chairman Gallagher said the committee will focus on reclaiming U.S. economic independence in key areas and on exposing the Chinese Communist Party’s coordinated, whole-of-society strategy to undermine American leadership. He also stressed the importance of ensuring the Committee’s work is bipartisan and that the committee draws a distinction between the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese people.

“CPA and our members look forward to working with Chairman Gallagher and members of the House Select Committee on China on policies to reshore supply chains and boost domestic manufacturing, especially in industries that are critical to U.S. economic and national security,” said Michael Stumo, CEO of CPA. “Additionally, it is vital that the committee investigate how the Chinese Communist Party is exploiting U.S. capital markets—with Wall Street’s help—to further its goals to undermine the U.S. and our allies. For too long, the U.S. government has sat idly by as Wall Street funneled U.S. dollars to Chinese companies and their subsidiaries that are involved in the Communist Party’s military, espionage, human rights violations, and ‘Made in China 2025’ industrial policy.”
