THE ROLE

The Economist will work with the CPA Chief Economist in researching, developing, and writing reports, working papers, and articles that support the development of post-neoliberal trade and industrial policies for the U.S. economy generally and for CPA’s manufacturing members.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge and an interest and/or experience in industrial economics, growth economics, econometric modeling, labor economics, international trade, and finance. The candidate will have excellent economic analysis skills with the ability to find, compile, analyze, and present data. The candidate should be a self starter with the ability to manage his/her time during the day, research and write articles on his/her own, communicate well orally, and work as part of an interactive team.   • Conduct investigative research to assess the structure and trends in industrial sectors.
  • Determine how policy choices would impact those sectors in terms of employment, price, capital expenditures, profit, and other parameters. Clearly convey your findings in writing.
  • Develop industry-specific projects to highlight challenges and solutions in key industries, including traditional manufacturing, high-tech manufacturing, agriculture, and industries of the future.
  • Develop comfort and confidence with key U.S. and international databases that provide employment and national income accounts, employment, and industrial data.
  • Learn and engage in economic modeling to determine the impact of trade agreements and other policy choices on the U.S. economy
  • Regularly update key data sets and indexes published by CPA on trade, employment, and industrial reshoring.
  • Write research articles that clearly present data and analysis for multiple audiences.
  • Run simulations of various scenarios on econometric models.
  • Support the Chief Economist and take the initiative in reporting and commenting on government statistical news releases such as trade and employment data.
  • Respond to member inquiries on data, research, and policy.

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics Master’s degree, M.B.A., or Ph.D. preferred.
  • Previous professional experience in economic or public policy analysis and writing to deadline required
  • Excellent research, analytical, and writing skills required, along with a strong attention to detail. Must be particularly skilled at gathering and presenting information in a clear, concise, and simple manner to persuade target audiences of varying political/ideological backgrounds.
  • Previous research and writing experience required.
  • Excellent time management skills and maturity to maintain a professional and productive workday in a remote work environment.
  • Good project and staff management skills along with a proven ability to manage projects through completion, on-time and within budget.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment, to organize multiple and varied assignments, and to work both independently and collaboratively with a team.
