House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Paul Ryan said legislation to renew trade promotion authority and other trade bills could reach both the House and Senate floors by early May but will not be approved before a visit by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe next week.

“I wish we could,” he said when asked after a committee hearing if it could get done before the Japanese leader’s visit. “It’s just the Senate doesn’t work that fast so we’re going to watch and see how the Senate goes because we want to work simultaneously with the Senate.”
