A resolution between the Trump administration and House Democrats over the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement is “imminent,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said Thursday.

Pelosi earlier this year instructed nine House Democrats to negotiate changes to USMCA with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer that would strengthen the deal’s labor, environmental, pharmaceutical and enforcement provisions.
“We are moving positively on [USMCA],” Pelosi said at her weekly press conference. “Again, it all comes down to enforcement. I do believe that if we can get this to the place it needs to be, which is imminent, that this can be a template for future trade agreements.”
Pelosi said her “goal” is to get USMCA done this year. As soon as talks between the House working group and USTR conclude, implementing language will have to be written and lawmakers already “have an idea of what that will be,” the speaker said, adding that she doesn’t “imagine that it would take much more in the Senate to pass.”
