Robust trade restrictions sought by U.S. aluminum producers in the Section 232 investigation into the national security implications of aluminum imports will not harm the economy or downstream users, aluminum executives argued on Wednesday.

The Commerce Department is expected to submit its report on whether aluminum imports threaten to impair the national security by Jan. 22, which marks the end of a 270-day time frame for the investigation initiated last April.
Mike Bless, CEO of Century Aluminum, defended broad trade remedies sought by upstream aluminum companies and called claims that such restrictions would hinder the U.S. economy a “misunderstanding.”
